Hi everyone, new to the forums here. I'm a DIY'er with an MX-980 that I setup myself using CCP. Looking for IR solutions for both my PS3 and HTPC. Would it be possible to use dual FLIRC's, or would I need different IR receivers for each device?

Thanks!

I would use the re-bl for the ps3.

The ir codes are under Aux- Audio Authority - C1071

Harmony's PS3 adapter is down to $20, if you want to save some money.

Not sure if Flirc can do PS3 power on, probably not. Other than that, two shouldn't be a problem unless you use standby a lot on your PC. In that case, any signal might wake it.

Ok, so are the codes for the Logitech PS3 Adapter in the URC CCP Database?

As far as the HTPC IR Receiver, I'm looking for one that I can use to turn-on my HTPC (would prefer standby and from complete powered off state), and can control with my MX-980 (if possible). I'm planning on using either XBMC or Plex (haven't decided yet). I've got a Logitech K400 already hooked up via a 65ft USB extension from my Media Closet to the Living Room (tested and works great), so for most functions I'll be using it, but would prefer to use the MX-980 to turn on the HTPC and start a movie, if possible.

Thanks!

I have no idea about CCP, but the pronto hex codes for the Harmony PS3 adapter have been posted on this site, and there are JP1 codes on the JP1 site. There are probably ways to get those into a URC.

I've had very mixed results with most MCE dongles. I have an Flirc dongle, but I've never actually used it. My Ortek and Diamond dongles work perfectly for standby every time and do everything I need.

For complete power off, you'll need to build or buy extra hardware for that. More trouble and expense than it's worth IMO. The half Watt you'd save wouldn't pay for the $30 hardware for about 100 years.

I wouldn't bother with Plex unless you have a lot of phone/tablet clients. Otherwise the picture quality kind of stinks due to all the transcoding Plex does.

Ok, thanks for the info on the hex and JP1 codes.

Understand the point about the power off state. I'm not worried about power either as I just installed a 8.4K DC Solar System on my roof and am producing about 150% of my power needs.

Good info on Plex. Only reason I thought about using it is that I travel overseas frequently for work and thought it'd be nice to reach back and watch my movie library from a foreign location. I'll look into XBMC and see if this is possible.

FWIW, I use Remote Potato to watch my recorded TV remotely. MB3 also works. Plex sort of works, but isn't practical in my case (pegs my CPU when transcoding, and my upload speed is not sufficient). I've played with XMBC (Kodi) briefly, but it wasn't my cup of tea (didn't like the interface). Any movies I might want to watch, I just bring with me, or VPN to stream directly. I just run a VPN server on my HTPC since my router can't do it. I don't watch movies on my phone.

I'm envious of you solar system. I've wanted to do solar for years, but costs have not come down enough in my part of the country to make it viable.

Certainly, you just have to teach the FLIRC different IR code sets.

Definitely use an IR-to-Bluetooth solution for the PS3. It's the only way you'll get full control, including power.

For Kodi/XBMC, most proper MCE adapters should work fine, and I'm in fact using two different ones on different systems... although one of these days I'd like to try a FLIRC (don't know why I don't have one). If whatever you buy doesn't natively support USB/IR power on from full off, don't bother adding it. Sleep mode works just fine in Kodi, and you can configure it to basically work like a standalone hardware media player, with near instant-on.

I've been using a tiny HP Chromebox for a couple months now with OpenElec, and I have to say it's been the best (and least expensive) HTPC/media player I've ever had.

Daniel: can your HP Chromebox stream blu ray ISO and 3D? I was looking at them an am interested to know how hard you pushed it.

Thanks!
