An issue raised from the past.

I have several MX-850s and recently got an MX-700 that I updated to my current configuration. Now I can't get any of these to connect any of these to my MX-850 Editor. The error is 102-57UU-0000 which says that either the com port is incorrect ot the cable is defective.. I have tried every com port, setting the Editor and port to the same one. I have tried three different computers, different USB to serial adapters, different USB cables when they can be detached from the adapter and nothing helps.

So I'm down to the serial cable that came with the device. Is this a standard kind of cable? I have found items listed as DB9 Female to 3.5mm Serial Cable. Should this work so I can test the last link in the chain? I don't know what else to try.

I have never had a simple cable fail but I suppose it's possible. It is pretty old (8 years) but has seen littler use.

It could very well be the cable. I was having sporadic issues with a cable that looked perfectly fine and had been working without problems - replaced and problems went away.

URC cable is a three conductor gold tipped plug. If yours is nickel plated, you may have an old Pronto cable and it will not work.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

For reference, this is the correct pinout for URC serial remotes:

And this is the WRONG pinout:

And yes, the cables definitely do wear out - the conductors eventually break from flexing. You can try pressing on cable where it goes into the jack, like holding it up/down/left/right as you try to connect. Sometimes you can get it to work, or at least get something that would prove the cable's bad.
