As the title says, I have a MX-780 that refuses the learn any codes. I get a timeout error very quickly after I press the button on the original remote I'm trying to learn. As the CCP Programming Manual suggests, I've tried varying distances up to 5 feet. Tried holding the button down. Tried double presses, etc.

Anyone else ever see this or have any suggestions?

Have you tried downloading a program into the 780?

Oh yeah...I've got my whole remote setup and working for the last few months. Just noticed though that the input selection for the Wii (obviously don't use it much), wasn't working, even though the database has the component listed (Sony STR-DN1020). Not sure why the MD/TAPE input I'm using for the Wii doesn't work, so I decided just to learn it from the remote. But it always times out as soon as I press any button on the original. Tried two different computers and different cables. Don't have another remote to try on though.

Try using the universal browser, adding the hex codes for the MD/Tape input:

0000 0066 0027 0000 005f 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0030 03f6 005f 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0030 03f6 005f 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 002f 0018 0030 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0019 0018 0030 0018

Thanks edmund, but that code didn't work either. Looks like it's a Sony12 protocol, for device 16, function 105. The function is correct (105), but the STR-DN1020 should be a Sony15, device 48, function 105 code like:

0000 0068 0000 0010 0060 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0345

I just generated this one with MakeHEX. I'll try it tonight.

But not being able to learn still has me baffled.

Were the batteries good in each remote? Did you highlight a key in a device before attempting to teach?

I did put fresh batteries in the MX-780. For the remotes I tried to learn from, after the Sony remote didn't work, I tried 3 other ones from other devices, and they didn't work either. Although they didn't have new batteries, they were all good working remotes.

When I went to teach a button, I would highlight the one I wanted in CCP, and then press the learn button on the macro dialog box. On the resulting pop-up window, I would type a description, and press learn. On the next pop-up I would wait for it to be ready, and then AS SOON as I pressed a key on the remote I wanted to learn from, the CCP window would flash timeout, and It would go back to the ready state. I could do this three times before the pop-up dialog would close back to the description / learn type pop-up. I'll try to get some screen grabs tonight to show what's happening.

I also emailed URC's tech support to see if they have any ideas. Maybe a bad remote? I just purchased it in May, so it should be under warranty still.

If want to replace it, check ebay for the x-7, prices are down to $60 mark on that clone of the mx-780.

Well I found a MX-1200 and MX-890, and both of them learn the IR codes perfectly well using the same PC and cable, so it has to be something flakey with the remote or possibly the CCP file? I tried erasing the remote in the setup menu (MAIN + ENT for 3+ seconds) and then redownloading the CCP file, and that didn't help.

Also just noticed that a few of my macros I use to shutdown my components (ie AV Receiver Off, TV Off, Cable Box Off) are not working either. None of the components are turning off. For the macros, I just brought the commands in from the IR database (duplicated what I used for each individual command). I did this prior to knowing how to use aliases. Maybe I need to try aliases instead. The individual commands do work if I do them separately.

So in summary, the remote can't learn IR, won't switch to certain inputs, and isn't working on certain macro commands.

I didn't see if you are using a basestation. If you are and you have your IR ports assigned, dragging the codes from the IRDB into the macro window will not work. You would have to drag those codes to within the device and than alias them in the macro so the remote knows what port to send the codes to.

No basestation in use.
