URC two-way modules created in house are free. If that is true why do we have to pay for the Gate controller, DNS-O-Matic, and Push Notifications two-way modules?

Aren't some or all of those third party via Automation App? They would need to be purchased.

But Automation Apps is owned and ran by a URC employee. Isn't it?

So then it's NOT owned by URC.

you are correct. It is not owned by URC. I am only wondering why URC is all about supplying the modules for Free to their dealers on the forefront but Also posting modules for sale on their website made buy URC employees.

I doubt he is doing it on company time. Urc would have to support the apps and I'm sure they aren't interested in that.

Good info for us not in the know. :) I dissected a 2-way module once (free one). The experience did show me how much goes into them and I can respect someone wanting to get compensated for their work. In the end I was only able to change the graphics and some very basic functionality and I could not make one from scratch on my own.

URC has never and will never charge for any modules that were created in-house. Automation Apps is owned by a URC Dealer, not a URC Employee. Josh, who has posted here a couple times as well started it.

Josh is my room mate, and yes I work for URC. I have assisted him in some of his deployments, mainly around some of the more complex urc-specific functionalities he wanted to deploy. A large part of my job is to support, maintain, and develop the SDK with my peers in NY - so what I provide Josh is no different than the support I provide to all other SDK Developers now and into the future.

Josh spends a good 20 hours a week at this point programming modules to add new functionality to the system, I believe he deserves compensation for those efforts. With the SDK 3rd Parties are able to develop modules on their own which can provide features we simply don't have time to do in-house.

URC's Total Control & ccGEN2 has the following modules in-house:

- iAqualink
- DSC Security
- Honeywell Security
- Bose (DSP)
- Symmetrix (DSP)
- The Energy Detective
- Aprilaire
- Lutron Radio RA2, Homeworks QS (Caseta is in testing)
- KNX
- HAI
- Nest
- Proliphix
- All Z-Wave Thermostats
- All Z-Wave Door Locks (this can be adapted to also do Garage Doors, btw)
- All Z-Wave Lighting
- Panamax / Furman
- Snap AV Wattbox
- Tons of 3rd Party IP Surveillance
- Roku

There are a ton about to come out as well, some of these that have been announced:

- Lutron Caseta
- Vantage (Longer Term)
- Direct TV
- Philips Hue
- Sonos
- HEOS
- Tons that haven't been announced in the works

None of the above cost a thing to the dealer and are fully supported by URC.

Josh has provided DNS-O-Matic, Pushover, Wi-Fi Garage & Gate Controller that he charges for. It's also good to point out he has given you guys Just Add Power CEC and a couple other modules at no charge (Just Add Power CEC I actually developed which is a big reason why it is free).

I am in the process of developing the new URC Developer Community. This will teach and encourage 3rd parties to begin developing new modules & solutions for the system using the powerful SDK which provides completely open access to the system & UI (in a sandbox environment at least). You can expect to see more modules that cost, yes... but they will be solutions that URC either hasn't had time to do or unique & special solutions that wouldn't make sense to develop internally. I would more options is always a good thing.

Thanks for putting an end to this Braden. I 100000% agree with you that Josh deserves to be compensated for both his time and hard work. What an asset to have you at his disposable to help if needed as well.
