The IR Database splits up the remote control for some components, such as AVRs. For example the Denon AVP-A1HDACI is broken up into several "Models" under the Denon brand in the IR database, AVP-A1HDACI [Main], with IR codes labeled Audio.1324.xxx, AVP-A1HDACI [Main2], with codes Audio.1325.xxx, AVP-A1HDACI [Net Audio], with codes Audio.1331.xxx, plus about seven more (ipod, zone2, zone3, xm, etc.)

When adding such a remote to a Devices menu, is it customary to add these as multiple independent devices (Main, Main2, Net Audio), maybe omitting any that are not needed (like zones), and just leave them like that. Or would it be more typical to go through the first 3 steps--create devices, layouts, and assign ir data--then merge all the pages into one big device and delete the ancillary devices?

If the latter is OK to do, what about the hard buttons? For example, the Main device assigns IR code Audio.1324.UP to the up button and the Net Audio devices assigns it Audio.1331.UP. However, it is the same physical button on the actual Denon remote, and I would think these two codes would produce identical IR signals.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

If you’re programming for yourself, do whatever makes sense to you.

When I’m programming a remote for customer use, I try to keep things as simple as possible. I don’t give them a “Device” page at all. All they see from the Main/Watch/Listen page(s) are activity macros with jumps to a single (if possible) device functions page. So for devices which are also activities (like Cable Box, Blu-ray, AppleTV, CD Player) I’ll go through the IR codes and remove commands which don’t work (like “PIP” on Cable Boxes) or are typically not needed (DVD “Angle”).

All devices / IR codesets for other, non-user-facing devices (TV, AVR, HDMI Switch) are on hidden pages so they can be aliased in macros. If I need Zone2 codes for an AVR, or discrete input codes for a TV, I’ll add that device on a hidden page; if I don’t need the code for a macro, I’ll leave that device out.

Thanks, Peter. I also try to keep the Activity pages simple. 99% of the time, there is no need to leave the Activities pages. However, I like to have Devices pages for each remote I'm replacing, that provide a complete set of buttons corresponding to the real remote (except ones that are meant to be programmed for other equipment, like the TV buttons on a cable remote).

That way, I can put the real remote away. If I want to try something obscure, like tweak the equalization, I can jump to the the Device page for the AVR remote. If I find I do it a lot, I can add a button to the activities page.

Anyway, back to CCP, I assume there is no issue moving the pages around after they have been created with the Model Designer. I was more worried about the hard-wired buttons like the direction arrows and numbers. I'm hoping, for example that AUDIO.1324.UP is completely interchangeable with AUDIO.1331.UP since both reference the identical physical button on the Denon AVR remote.

I never let CCP auto assign i.r. codes. I use the database navigator and manually pull the needed codes onto each button in one large device. Then I hide the page of that devices codes that the customer should not need to use or see like the Power commands.
