I've got a broken select button in the middle of the left, down, right and up button pad. It's a very old remote, however, I'd like to take a look inside to see if I can fix it. Any suggestions regarding how to open the case?

Gee, what a surprise, another smart-ass comment from a "professional". That seems to be the primary response on this site these days when someone asks for assistance. What happened to the days when members actually offered help where they could? For a DIYer, what's the point of even coming here anymore?

Dude, you have the Edsel of remotes there. How long do you think you can keep it running and why would you want to?

Certain guys insist on conducting themselves in that manner. Please don't lump all of us pros together. I'll post more when I'm not on my phone later today.

Ok, on a computer. In order to open pretty much any of the URC remotes, you have to slide a thin knife or flat head screwdriver in along the edge where the darker grey of the back meets the silver of the front. You have to be careful here as a slip will result in a nice trip to the hospital. Once the blade or screwdriver tip is in, rotate the back of the knife/screwdriver down and it will pop the cover up. Do this on the other side and it will probably be loose enough for you to remove the cover. Once the cover is offyou can remove the wire clip that goes to the RF antenna. There will be 4 small screws on the back of the circuit board that you will now have to remove. There is another clip on the top of the remote just to the right of the USB port that you will want to unclip. This will allow you to lift the circuit board just enough to get to the buttons.

Now that you've gotten this far, I hope you are ready for the bad part. The select button is the one button that is not easily removeable. I have never replaced one but it is attached to the circuit board whereas the rest of the buttons are not. At least with the above steps you can take a look yourself and see if it is worth trying to fix. At the end of the day if you decide it is not worth it, perhaps an upgrade will be the best course of action.

That's what we've been saying, dude.

That's for him to decide. What you failed to say is WHY you were saying to replace it. He can now make that decision on his own.

Goldenzrule-thanks for the tutorial. I will take a look but I never really expected to be able to fix it. Still, I think it's worth a look.

kgoosen-I can take a joke. I knew what image I would find in your link before I ever clicked on it. If it was a joke, it's a very old joke. How many times do you think that reference has been made on this site? Thousands, tens of thousands, more?

I'm definitely in the market for a new remote, however, the policies of these remote companies make it nearly impossible for a DIYer to purchase and program quality equipment. "Professionals" like to ridicule Harmony but also tell DIYer's to go utilize that product. For me, I see only one choice for obtaining a quality product which I can program myself-URC. Would like to try RTI but it's not allowed.

I'm sure some will now say the MX-3000 isn't a quality product, it's a toy. Perhaps, but how does it compare to Harmony or other possible solutions for a DIYer?

Some also say URC products are only available to dealers when it's so clear they're available to DIYer's as well. Just make sure you buy from an authorized dealer who is willing to provide the software. This has been stated here by URC personnel yet some "Professionals" misstate this policy. Why? Are they so hard up for business they think this will spur a DIYer to come to them for their remote? Makes no sense-some people are just disgruntled.

As for purchasing a new remote, I would like a hard button remote this time, preferably one with the red, green, yellow and blue buttons. The only URC remote with these is the MX-890. I could get this, however, isn't there a new complete control line coming (CCP2)? Don't want to make a decision before seeing what's going to be available. This is why I'd like to get a bit more life out of my MX-3000.

If anyone would like to suggest a hard button remote for a one room home theater I'd welcome the information. I would likely want a new processor/controller to go along with it, ideally one capable of IP based commands. I currently use an MRF-300 (with the RFX-250 antenna which essentially turns it into a MRF-350). My equipment is pretty straight forward consisting of a TV, audio/video receiver, satellite DVR, optical disc player and streaming box. Not really interested in a tablet solution since there's no hard buttons.

I still use the MX3000 and have a couple of spares in a box that are pristine, so could sell you one if you wanted to carry on, I am in the UK so shipping might be an issue, but pm me if you are interested.
