For any given device, I see a drop down box for set numbers or something. What are these for and how do I pick the correct one for IR?

each set of codes in the database is assigned a codeset number.  one codeset can work for several models.  for instance, there are several samsung tv model numbers listed in the database, but many of them use the same codeset.  once you program enough remotes, it is faster to just type in the codeset number that corresponds to your device so you don't have to find the model number in the list.

In addition to the Samsung comment, you may find your tv model, but you will also find "Samsung discrete" codes. These give you discrete basic codes, on, off, inputs, but do not give you volume, menu , smart TV features. Sometimes you have to mix and match to get what you want, (drag and drop)
why have a nice system if you cant operate it, program the remote the right way the FIRST time!
