The keypads wear out. You can open the remote and try to clean any obvious debris, but as far as I know there's no lasting fix for revitalizing a contact once it starts to wear. I wish URC would just sell us some blank keypads, and we could keep these things running.
Would it be possible to salvage a keypad from another MX-850? You could just buy a cheap used one and use it for spare parts.
Mine is six years old and still works great. It's in a classroom, not a home, so it doesn't get used and abused like my home remote. Which by the way is a SONY RM-VL710, is about the same age, shows a lot of wear, but still works well. Labels are fading and the buttons are wearing, though.
