Hi,

I have had a MX 880 for just over 3 years. I have the remote to control the home theater in the basement, so it hasnt been used excesively, maybe a couple of times a month or less.

This month I noticed that the battery would not hold a charge so I thought the battery was dead. I replaced it and same problem, the remote would be dead the next day. I charged it and had it on a table close to me to and noticed that the LCD and backlight would come one and the backlight would flash several times. After this any button press would not be recognized by the remote. After a while (sometimes minutes or sometimes hours) it would start recognizing inputs. This would happen every few minutes. I reset the remote and re-loaded my files. Still same problem. Has anyone had anything similar? Any ideas how to solve? I tried to disable the pick up sensor but that didnt help.

I called URC and they claim they do not repair remotes and all they can do since I'm out of warranty is sell me another MX 880 for 30% off retail. I personally think this is ridiculous given I spent 499 on the remote about 3 years ago! I recall reading on the forum that URC repaired remotes. Is it true they dont repair remotes any more? If this is the case I might have to think about just changing the system, this kind of customer service is terrible for a high end product.

Thanks for your help,
Frustrated customer.

So URC should support the remote beyond the manufacturer's warranty? What is it you want?

It sounds like $499 - 30% is the solution. You clearly have the editor and your remote files, sooooo......

A repair solution would be good. I have no issues in paying for a repair. Not even considering to see what is wrong with the remote or evaluating the problem is something I have a problem with.

So if this would have happened after a year, I understand you would be fine to just go out and buy a new remote? Oh, and the 30% off is only for the 880, no other model.

the mx880 has a tilt sensor. it could be defective. i would try going into the hidden menu and disabling the tilt sensor if possible.   i believe you hold watch and channel enter at the same time to get into the menu.

Thanks Duct Tape. I tried that and still the same issue. I guess that would mean there is an issue with the light button?

possibly.  you might want to try to open up the case and see if you can clean the buttons.  maybe something spilled into the remote?

How do you open the remote? Nothing spilled. Always kept in a cabinet when not in use, away from the kids!

i believe that it is snapped together.  usually you can use an old credit card and wedge it between the case and give the case a bit of a twist.   search on the forum, i believe someone did a writeup on how to open up an MX900,  the 880 should be similar.

Here is a link to the old thread that has the detailed instructions on how to open the MX-900. It should be very similar to the MX-880 remote.

If you want your remote repaired, rather than spending money on a replacement, call some local electronics/TV repair shops. If they are any good, they should be able to fix your remote. Most of the ones I've dealt with do not charge for giving an estimate. Call around. That's the best thing you can do, based on your options.
