You can just pick up a USB to serial adaptor and get this

[Link: ebay.com]

Look up the COM port in your device manager that you are connected to, match the COM port in the settings in the software and you're good. The remote does take a minute or two to download the program, so you have to be patient with that one.

OK - thanks again.

He was pretty set on doing this Saturday, but it really seems like we'll have to put it off if he can't find that cable. I don't mind ordering the new one, I just don't want to make the drive out to Long Island twice (especially if once is just to program the remote).

You guys have been super helpful, I appreciate it. if I run into any snags once everything is in place, I'll report back.

EDIT: does the 850 have a button-to-button learning feature? maybe he'd be satisfied without macros, but with the ability to at least turn the dang TV on and switch inputs for now...

Hi guys,

Well, after a lot of delays, it looks like Sunday's the day we're doing this thing. I got the adapters I need to connect the remote to a modern computer, downloaded the program recommended in this post:

You are in luck, this will do the job,

...and have done some preliminary testing, and at least my computer seems to be OK communicating with the remote. But! I don't see at least two of the devices I'm supposed to be installing and programming the remote to control listed in the device code database. I ran the updater, and ran it again just to be sure, and according to the editor program, I'm all up to date.

Anything I can do here? I see in the editor program there's a "learn" function - presumably I can just use that to learn functions from the individual device remotes (if he has them available), right?

By the way, just for full disclosure - I did ask around with my current employers, in the purchasing, IT and AT (academic technology) departments, and talked to some of our vendors directly. None of them deal with URC equipment, it seems...I guess all of these guys threw in their lot with Crestron and never really looked back. As such, I can't get into the dealer portal on the URC page by any honest means to look up the editor's manual, or any other codes.

Please do feel free to tell me I'm just SOL - I've been kinda waiting for the last straw in that area. Of course, if I'm not and you can still help out...that'd be welcome too!

Good luck with the remote. I would recommend either learning the desired IR codes in or you can directly import HEX codes too (if you already have them from a crestron or similar file/database/etc.)

One thing to be aware of/take note of - is that series as well as previous versions of the series can be VERY finicky with regards to uploads and transferring. I've killed more then my share of remotes over the years and spent countless hours working to reset them (I'm been fortunate to save all but 2) so I'd recommend searching this as well, I believe I posted a thread about 4 years ago the last time I had issues with it.

In my experience, I've only had luck downloading to the remotes using a Windows XP computer (neither vista nor 7 worked well for me). Also make sure to save constantly as the programs are very prone to crashing.

If you want to help your buddy great. I refuse to program or make changes to that and previous generations of the remote for clients as the risk of the remote bricking and being a time suck as well as a fairly outdated remote just doesn't make sense.

Odds are that if you only have to change codes for the TV and receiver there will already
Be something in the database that will work. Will not be listed as the right model number
But you have the ability to test IR codes from other models, and can then add to existing
file.

I would start by saving the file you have now, and renaming so you still have a copy of
The original. This always seemed like a strange process with the software to me, so just make
Sure you have a new file where ever you chose to save it before you start.

Panasonic DMP-BD60 (blu-ray deck)
Samsung UN55D6300SFXZA (TV)

I assume I can just try the newest generic codes for both and get some results, or teach individual commands - but if possible it'd be good to get a full command set, since these are the two components he's most likely to tweak and mess around with the most.

believe me - I've tried about a dozen times since we started talking to convince him to go with a remote made in the last decade. He's got a strong attachment to this one for whatever reason - the price he paid when it was new, being familiar with the button layout, being stubborn as hell...whatever the reason, he's fixated on it. I'm headed over there in about an hour and already warned him that if this doesn't work, I'm buying him a low end Harmony to run his four components and he'll have to learn to like it ;-)

You shouldnt have any issues finding codes in the database for those pieces.

try tv codeset 655 for the samsung.  I dont remember the panasonic codeset, but i am sure there is one in there that will work for you.

So all things considered, Sunday went really smoothly. The only real snag we hit was my five year old losing his patience for being away from home at right around the time we really dug into programming the remote...but I managed to get it into basic working condition for him, and we agreed that I'd head out there again in a few weeks to really pin down a useful and personalized program for the family.

I didn't see your post in time to dig around or try that code set, Duct Tape - but thanks! I'll look into it some more before the next session. All else fails, I was able to teach the remote a bunch of codes, and my buddy's not the serious tweaker type, so I figure I can get away with calibrating the screen / audio options myself and leaving the complicated functions off the remote.

Thanks again for all your help, everyone!
