When i press a button on remote i need to play music.

Button 1 - Play music
Button 2 - Play Instrumental Music
Button 3 - Play Random Artist all songs
Button 4 - Play Jazz Music

I have an iPod which has music sorted out by Album, Artist, Genre, etc. Also a NAS which has this data.

So how i make this work with URC. URC ipod dock?

Can i do this?

the URC PSX2 ipod dock has tons of discrete codes to do what you want to do.

It won't access your NAS drive though.

What other equipment do you have? A Yamaha Aventage (and even some of their lower models) can pretty much do all this from their iPhone or Android App. You can access an iPod plugged into the front USB port, or stream from your phone. You can access a NAS drive, and you can select a genre or playlist right from the app. Would be a pretty easy way to accomplish everything. I'm not a fan of using streaming services from a remote. A two-way remote changes some things with this opinion depending on the system. With URC, I would rather go the Yamaha route honestly. I love URC products but not a big fan of the 5000 or 6000. I haven't worked with Total Control so their products may be a bit better with 2-way.

My plan was to keep a KP-900 remote near the front door and configure the device buttons to control the ipod to play music.

Does the dock only work with 5000 or 6000?

I use a bose receiver which has a ipod dock. let me try to see if bose has some functionality to play things.

The URC dock will work with other remotes, but you will not have 2 way feedback. Bose does have a zone remote that allows for two way communication with their iPod dock, but I am not sure one what models.

Having the KP-900 makes it even further necessary to have something in the way of an app to control the music IMHO. It will allow you to turn music on, and skip songs, play, pause, but you will not have the ability to select music without walking over to a TV.

If all you want to do is play a certain genre of music, there are discrete ir codes for that.  You dont need to see the tv for that.  Look in the ir database at all the codes.  They are listed under AUX/Universal Remote Control

the kp4000 would be a great choice for this setup if you could get a cat5 to the keypad location.  It fits in a double gang box and will give you full 2 way control of the psx2 dock.

+1 on the KP4000. Would be a much better choice if doable.

As John said in correcting me, you can use codes for some control. It will be limited, you can just start music, in his case, in a particular genre, but not specific songs, unless you look at a TV. However, you could still start the music if that is all you are looking to do.
