Can a mx-780 suddenly become a trc-780? :)

No, there are some differences internally.

The oldest one lasted 9mo. I have to make a call to URC tomorrow. The client has my loaner. I hate buying spare remotes.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

The thing that worries me about these 780 failures, is the 890 and 1200 appear to use a very similar chassis packed with much more functionality and much more expensive. I hope this is not a sign of quality issues to come in these newer products.

I have not had a single issue with 780's. I have a bunch out there, and two at home. No failures or reboots, with the exception of when the batteries are dying and the battery meter is in the red. It will sometimes reboot.

I want to thank Hank too, he gave me the opportunity to purchase the mx-780 via employee discount. It arrived the week the middle building in my apartment house burnt down:

Wow... all I can say is... powerful macro, man.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.
