We never used these before. Have a customer we need to provide RS232 for a JAP Cisco switch. He has a couple of 980's and an 850. I'm not seeing a way to get the trigger codes on the 850? Am I missing something?

It can be done but it requires a workaround. You'll need to setup those trigger commands in a more current remote (his 980 for instance), set them to IR output and then learn them into the 850. Then return the program to be RF. I've done this before and it does work however it's kind of a pain and I also believe I lost port routing when using the 850. I'd just upgrade him to another 980 for ease of use, consistancy, charge dock, etc. I think i wrote a step by step on how to do this a while ago, others have too, but that's the jist of it.

the only real limitation with learning the triggers to an MX850, is if you are dealing with RS232 devices and repeating commands.

there is a glitch in the msc400 that makes rs232 codes repeat unless you tap the button for a very, very short duration.  this usually isn't an issue if you are just repeating volume up and down commands, but if you need to navigate a menu using RS232, it can be a pain.

the work around for this is to create two smart macros.  one for the code to repeat, and another with the repeat option disabled.   then on your remote, you create a press and hold macro for the commands that you need to repeat.   a short press triggers the non-repeating smart macro, if held you trigger the repeating smart macro.  there is a tech bulletin (#10) over at the URC Control Room that explains this.

If I remember correctly, the MX850 can't do a press and hold.  So you wouldn't be able to trigger both commands with a single button.

Thanks Duct. URC themselves said you couldn't teach the trigger codes, I thought that sounded lame. We sold them another 980. Just needed the MSC for the Cisco switch.
