I have never programmed Universals, but have extensive experience with RTI. My client just purchased a new boat that has 8 or 9 MX-900i remotes on it. He is having some issues with the electronics on the boat. I downloaded the MX-900 editor to pull the programming off the remotes so I can see how everything is wired and programmed.
I plugged the remote in to my computer, let it go through the USB installer. Opened the MX-900 editor and proceeded to upload. It made it about halfway through the upload then the program stopped. It said it couldn't connect to the remote anymore.
Now the remote is blank and is lit up blue. I'm really hoping the programming is still on the remote, but I can't manage to do anything on it.

Does anyone have any advice?

I'm guessing that you pulled the USB plug, rebooted and tried again ? I have had several intermittent fatal interrupts (disconnections) in the upload process during my years of programming URC remotes.

Last Friday while programing my 980, these disconnects were occurring quite frequently. I had my PC laptop sitting on the desk that services my Mac Pro desktop (wireless mouse, monitors, etc). My Mac was going crazy also and I figured out that there was some kind of interference going on between the PC laptop, MX980 and the Mac. I suspected the wireless mouse. When I moved my PC laptop to a different room, all the problems went away.
I'm not sure this will help, but you should try it again, but away from all the electronics.
