Any reason not to use 433MHz all of the time instead of trying 418MHz first and then realizing there is interference and switch to 433MHz? I posted this also on the URC Control Forum.

I do remember something mentioned about 433mhz in NYC, that you could not use it for some reason or other.  Even URC is moving away from 433/418 to Zigbee/Wifi/Ethernet.

418 in NYC is a mess, just as it can be in many major metropolitan cities. Same for a lot of Canada for some reason.

URC originally added 433 for Europe since 418 was prohibited due to conflict with first responder's frequency. In some circles, the comment is that 418 gives you greater range than 433, but I don't know if that has ever been substantiated. Many installers use both frequencies in a 2 stack-o-gear house so they don't get any conflicts with the upstairs cable box being controlled by the downstairs remote.

MX880z was added as the only 2.4GHz (they won't call it Zigbee) in their mainstream line, and I don't know if they are going anywhere else with it at present. URC's 2.4GHz is used a lot in yachts & motor coaches since there will never be RF address conflicts. WiFi/ethernet at their high end has been good, especially with the affordable KP4000 and the recent price move on the MX5000.

Another advantage when using 418 vs 433 vs Zigbee is when you have the need to support a control system with a lot of base units per square foot. By mixing the frequencies you can avoid a lot of collision and inter-mingling of commands. Even when switched to different channels on base units of similar freqs you have a small window of collision that can occur, especially when ramping channels or volume.
