I have two RF combos, the MX-800+MRF200 and MX-850+MRF250. The MX-850 seemed to stop transmitting RF the other day. Two troubleshooting techniques seem to indicate it is RF on the remote.

1) IR line of site works fine, but my equipment is behind cabinet doors. Nothing on the MX-850 is hitting the MRF250. Reprogrammed the MX-850 with my MX-800 config and it didn't hit the MRF200 at all either.

2) Reprogrammed the MX-800 with the MX-850 config and it works fine with my MRF250.

These are both probably around 5-6 years old, so no warranty. I guess I have 3 options.

a) Technically, I have an EE degree and a bunch of tools so I was thinking about trying to troubleshoot/fix the remote myself. Anybody got any suggestions of what to look for or try?

b) Anybody know repair shops I could send it to? I don't see that URC offers any sort of repair services from their website.

c) I suppose I can sell it for parts and buy another new/used one.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Steve

Call URC. Even though it is out of warranty they will replace it with a new MX-850 for a fee.

Very common problem on MX850. If you shake the remote and hear a rattle, the RF board has broken away from the mother board. You can resolder it or URC has a replacement policy on them. I think its $100

OK, you were correct. I shook the remote and heard a slight rattle. It took a while to figure out how to open the remote. The (I assume) RF module was partially broken away from the motherboard.

I got two answers regarding URC for support - free and $100. I'd certainly like the $0 answer better. Anybody have recent experience here?

Thanks again for the help!

I think I said for a fee - not free. I sent in a defective mx700 and got the mx850 for a replacement for $144 including shipping.

Haha - you were right. I really wanted to see free, but you indeed wrote fee. I think I looked at that 1/2 dozen times and didn't catch it correctly. Going to try soldering it today.

We are good to go. Got the sucker soldered up and added some epoxy to stabilize. No more throwing the remote around either :-)
