I can't even program the MX-850 button-by-button using the VIP922's remote. Is it impossible, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

You might have to change remote id on the dish box itself. Use the dish remote and go into installation i believe

The 922 doesn't have remote ID's, as far as I can tell. And anyway, that assumes that I've been able to program the Universal remote from the Dish remote. I have had no success programming it using the "learning" feature. It doesn't seem to recognize any of the signals from the Dish remote I'm trying to use to "teach" it. That's my initial hurdle... Thanks for any advice...

Actually, I think I've nailed down what's going on: The Dish 922 remote isn't sending IR signals (only RF), so that it's unable to "teach" the URC. Is there a way to switch the Dish 922 remote so that it sends IR rather than (or in addition to) RF (and then to switch it back again when I'm done using as the "teacher"?)

I've seen a couple postings on other sites saying to hold the SAT button until the lights blink, and then press #01 to switch it to IR, but this doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks!

Don't remember the model number of the dish network box or the process of doing it, but a couple times in the past had to learn the commands directly off the front panel of the dish receiver. This was a few years ago so I'm not sure if that would be your fix or not. Hope this helps.

Like andrew, I dont recall exactly how I got it to work. I think I had to learn each command. Sucked, but worked. Been working for two or three years no problem.
