Ugh, I came downstairs yesterday to find my MX-980 on the floor, face down. :(

When I picked it up, the LCD panel did not light up but all the buttons do. So the motion sensor is fine.

Two days earlier, the LCD panel lost a lot of contrast but still lit up. So I'm assuming the LCD panel was just on its way out and now needs to be replaced. Does anyone know how much that might cost or where to find a replacement?

It's out of warranty and URC is all closed up today.

Btw, the remote still controls all my equipment fine. :)

Earthquake, the dog, the kid, extraterrestrials?  This doesn't sound like a warranty issue to me, but URC will replace it new (for a small price).  Do you have the program?

Not sure how it got on the floor?

The screen has been blinking on and off all day. Could just be a loose connection.
I'll open it up I think and take a look.

Hope URC doesn't charge too much to replace the LCD if it needs that.

They won't replace the LCD, they will sell you a new remote.

You are correct... Just called and they refuse to repair it or sell me an LCD to replace on my own.

I love my mx-980 but URC is no longer a leader IMO.
Time to check out Harmony.

Unless someone here wants to sell me an lcd screen.

If a Logitech LCD dies out of warranty they will not repair it or send out an LCD to replace it either. They may offer to sell you a new one at a discounted rate.

Why are you surprised at this?

Whether or not they are still the leader, you would be going the wrong way!

Wow, downgrading is not going to make you happy. That's a very expensive and tedious repair - the company does not have the manpower to do repairs like that and develop and implement. That's what makes them a great company. Quite honestly, people own remotes for many years and they don't suffer the horrible death yours did. Have some accountability and stop blaming in on URC. There is no Harmony that compares to that of URC and if you think Logitech is a great company who is going to repair any damage you send them it might be a stretch from the real truth.

I re-seated the ribbon cable (see red square, ignore the red circle).
And now the display is working perfectly.

I personally like the URC line of products. Their remotes certainly feel nice and are ergonomically well designed, although they do feel a little on the light side. The trade in policy that URC uses is probable the only way to do business in a tough global economy.

The policy does come at a price though for both URC and the end user. I'm sure URC is just breaking even on damaged exchanges. It's not worth it for them. I suppose they do it to keep the end user loyal. I'm not sure this works for the end user, when you have to shell out almost 1/2 the cost of a new remote.

I had my MX-5000 break and I fixed it myself. It was probable my fault from excess programming and over use of the USB port. After taking the remote apart, I got to see what a $1200.00 remote looks like. It's fragile to say the least. I'm sure the $1200.00 doesn't go into R&D drop testing the remote.

Should remotes be dropped? NO!
Do they get dropped? Yes!
Should they be sat on after left in the couch? NO!
Do they get sat on? Yes!
.
I have a suggestion for URC and other remote companies.
Fill them with an epoxy just like the automotive industry does with ECU's. The cost will be minimal but will be recouped on service calls. If a unit does fail, it will be unserviceable. It will save URC money on returns and service calls because there will be less of them. The epoxy will add to the minimum weight, which could be also viewed as a good thing.

5 cents per unit could go a long way........................

But what do I know?
I do know that I've seen epoxy filled electronics flying through the air at 100+ MPH and work again and again!
Why can't manufactures make a remote that can fall 2 ft off a couch?
I'd gladly spend $1200.05 for that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice that you could fix it yourself!  Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Out of curiosity, how much would URC what to do an exchange like that?  I have three 980's and a new born so it is well within the realm of possibility.
