I've copied an existing device and then pasted a new copy into the Watch tree. It appears in the tree and the commands function as expected, but I can't "link" it to an LCD button in the same fashion that creating the device new in the "Create and Name Devices" accomplishes. Is there a way to do this or must I always recreate the device from scratch.

Thanks.

what do you mean you cant "link" it to an LCD button? What are you trying to link exactly?

I guess the easiest way to explain is to describe the difference between the created devices...

If I create the device from scratch using the Program/Create & Name Devices menu, an LCD button is also created, which if deleted (the LCD button) throws up a dialog asking if I want to also delete the linked device.

If I instead make the device via copy/paste (or importing), no LCD button is created and instead one must be added manually and a macro added that contains a jump to the newly pasted device.  The difference is that if I delete this LCD button it simply gets deleted, no warning about deleting a linked device and if fact the pasted device is not deleted.

Hopefully that was a little clearer than mud...

In any case, playing around with pasted/imported devices further, I'm not sure this even makes a difference as the devices/pages seem to work as I would expect.  I would still like to understand what's going on though.

Thanks.

I really dont understand what you mean by no LCD button is created. When you copy and paste a device from the Model Designer to the Model Designer, the new device's LCD buttons within the device should exactly match the first device. If I select/highlight a device in the Model Designer, bring up my context menu -> copy, then paste... The entire device is copied... including all the LCD buttons, and they match exactly.

Still I'm confused as to how this is different than what you are trying to explain? It is possible that I could better help you if you post a link to your file, maybe I could check it out and see what you are referring to.

The only thing I could think of that you might be referring to is if you create a device via the program wizard, it creates a LCD icon. This icon is automatically linked to your device and if you try and delete the icon, it asks if you wish to delete the device associated with it. Then if you copy this device via context menu or keyboard shortcuts and paste it in the model designer... a new icon has to be created manually to jump to this device. If you then try to delete this new icon associated with the newly copied device, there shouldn't be a prompt asking you if you wish to delete the device associated with the button because the device was created without linking it to a button to begin with.

That's the only sense I can make of what you are trying to explain.

So let me rephrase the question slightly...

Is it possible to link a device, created by copy/paste with the context menu in the Model Designer window of CCP, to a device LCD button, in the same way that devices created using the 'Program/Create & Name Devices' menu are linked to their device LCD buttons?

A second question, which perhaps renders this first question moot, does it even matter?

I've been playing around with devices created both ways, and I am not finding any obvious difference other than their behaviour when being deleted.  I just want to avoid any problems down the road that might be caused by my overlooking something here.

Thanks.

Yes. For example, say you have a BD player that also plays SACDs and you want it as a separate device under Listen so you can rearrange the 1st and 2nd page buttons. You could duplicate the BD device found under "Watch" by copy/pasting it to the "Listen" section, then use the "Program/Create & Name Devices" menu to create a button labeled SACD. This will automatically create a jump to SACD. Just change the jump to go to the BD device you just added to the "Listen" section. Of course, if the initial BD device is from the IR database, it would be far easier to just assign those same database commands to the new SACD device.

I tried this, but unfortunately it did not change the behavior I'm seeing. Thanks for the suggestion though.

It looks like what I need to do is avoid copy/paste in the Model Designer window altogether and do it in Simulator instead, where the device is already "linked" to a LCD button. Although after a bit of testing it looks as though the existence of this link is largely irrelevant in normal operation of the remote.

its pretty simple, just copy the device and link to it with the LCD button of your choice with a jump macro. there really isnt a problem here. thats normal operation

Parish_d, You were actually very clear with your original question. I have a similar issue.
Your question was, when you use copy/paste.
My question is - what if I import a device?
I imported, say, a datasat device (from another CCP file).
Now, I need a device button in the main menu.
How do I create a device button? I could create a new device, call it datasat2. Then put in a macro to this datasat2 device's button in main page, to jump to the page one imported datasat device. This would work, but I am now stuck with a useless device named datasat2, showing in my device list.
So, I am going rephrasing your original question: If I import a device, how do I create a device button for it in the main menu?

Just use the Image Gallery and place a button where ever you would like. Then create your macro with a jump to your device on that button.

Did you import the device using the Transporter?

Like goldenzrule said, you should be able to create a button in the main / watch page that jumps to the device, which will then show the buttons on that device's page. That's what I did when I imported several devices using Transporter in my 990.

goldenzrule, dj garcia.. thanks for trying to help. The only way I know, how to create a button in main page is by creating a new device but this would create a new device in the name of the button. Of course, I can jump to the page 1 of the original device I imported but I now have an extra device which is useless. Please clarify..
thanks.

I already explained what you need to do in my post.

I clicked on tools/image gallery..
A box appears on the right with:
Image gallery on top, and below is
Blank buttons.
I click on the dots next to blank button, I get a new window with a folder named image gallery. Nothing inside the folder. The only option is to select this folder and this window closes.
I do not see any buttons I can drag and drop.
The only way I can drop an image onto the main page, is through create a device menu.. when I drag and drop an image this way, it creates a new device automatically.
Can you please explain how to use Image gallery without creating a new device? I cant seem to figure it out.
thanks

I don't know what you mean by transporter. I imported by right clicking on the main and selecting import device. The device got imported but there is no corresponding device button on the main menu.
