I'm aware this may be a silly question for some of the experts but I'm at a crossroads in terms of a basic template design for my MX5000.

My intention is to use a single MX5000 remote for several rooms in the house. Each room will have it's own set of devices. This of courses would mean independent default volume codes for each room, etc. My first thought would be to create "ROOM" icon at the home page for each room I plan to use the remote then build a list of devices for each room. However, it seems CC is not really designed this way unless you are using multiple remotes and/or multiple stations in the same home. With that said, would like some opinions on my design approach.

At the end of the day, each room would have it's own set of devices and discrete codes. Most importantly, volume and mute for each display by default. I'm aware I can do this by creating devices as "rooms" in CC but I felt I was going against the basic design concept the software. Maybe I'm over complicating this.

Any thoughts?

My vote would be for a remote in each room.... Carrying one remote throughout the house will get annoying really fast and will create conflicts when more than one person needs to use the remote.

That said, I would create a button for each room and go from there.

At some point, I probably will go with additional remotes in my home. However, the button for each room concept is my plan for now. However, it looks like I need to makes each "device" I create in CC as a room. Unless you see another way do to this?

Of course the least confusing thing to do is use separate controllers in each room, but you can do whatever you want. Yes, you can pick what room you are in first. You can also make a page of activities for each room (Living rm activities are Main page 1, master bed activities are page 2, and so on,) and page back and forth between rooms.

You will have to do separate system off for each zone. Another idea is a press and hold that shuts down all zones.

The layout and design can be done multiple ways. I have done this before and I normally put room icons on the main page. They are not devices. They simply jump to another page with the activity macros for that room.

I hide all the devices. You are right, you will probably have to create separate devices for each room so you can have different volume mostly. You can try to use variables, but it can get a bit clunky. There is plenty of memory to have more devices and you can copy/paste to make it quick.

Really, if you picture it how you would like it to be laid out and operate, and start building it to look like that. Once you get all the buttons and activities, in place, go to work on macros and punch throughs. It will come together quicker as you progress through the process.

Are you using MRF stations in each room? If so, the press and hold ALL OFF is a good idea mentioned above. Makes it nice if you are in the bedroom and want to make sure everything is off in the house.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess the bottom line is there is no "wrong" way to do this. I started off with room icons and activities off the the main pages. I then used the "device" tree for specific rooms that required independent volume control. This seemed to work fine. Not exactly true to CC's design concept but I guess that doesn't matter.

Thanks again.

We have done that in a condo where there are 2 users. They are typically in the same room at the same time. We created a room for each zone and then put a set of equipment in each room. We now have control in each room and volume control punch through as well.

It can be done but probably should not be done if the residence is used by many.
