I just picked up an MX-980 and I would like to be able to use it to control the lights in my AV room. I know URC has teamed up with Lutron to create some switches that can be controlled via RF with most URC remotes. Is that the only way to go? If so, are the Lutron dimmers available through URC the only ones that can be controlled with the URC remote?

Currently I have Insteon dimmers throughout my house, which also are X-10 compatible. If there is a way to control them with the URC remote, that would be the preferred solution.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You can use an IR to X-10 box to control the light switches.

There's an Insteon converter as well that would be better suited to your use. See it here.

The URC/Lutron dimmers and switches are not the only way to go, but they are, IMHO, the cleanest way to go. With them there is nothing extra to do (such as running wires for IR emitters or any other hardware work).

I think this is one thing that URC got right.

If all someone wants to do is control their lights, the Lutron switches are definitely the way to go. They're expensive, but you won't find a simpler or more elegant solution. Since you have already invested a great deal of money in Insteon switches, it makes much more sense to go with the IR to Insteon converter that Mike linked to. They work very well. In fact, I use several of them to control Insteon switches all over my house with 900s, 880s and a 980. Bottom line, I couldn't be happier! :)

as a point of clarification, if you choose the lutron you must get the URC versions, regular Lutron radio RA are not compatible. You can still use Lutrons version but you must use a flasher and 9 button control pad. I have a 980 i just hooked up to a Lutron radio RA system with the infra red, works great.
