I am just trying to figure out if I am having really bad luck or there is some design / manufacturing problem with this remote. I am now up to two broken MX-810 remotes. When I plug the battery charger into the remote, it no longer engages the contacts and will not charge the battery.

The first one broke after about two weeks so I returned it for a replacement. The second one is now broke about three weeks later with the exact same problem. The funny thing is that on both remotes the charging plug does seat all the way down into the remote. I would say it goes maybe a third or half of the way down. It just does not seem correct, but it will not go down any further.

I am past my return period, so I can ship it back under warranty to URC. But I am really concerned about never getting a working remote. It is also quite a pain to be without a remote for however long it takes to process the RMA.

I thought URC was supposed to have high quality products. It seems like very poor quality to having a charging port break on what is supposed to high end equipment. Hopefully I am just having really bad luck, and it is not a widespread problem. Is anyone else running into this problem?

Maybe you should use the MX980 and not worry about the plug.

The cradle system on the 980 is better than the butt plug on the 810/880; HOWEVER, he has spent $400 on a product and it should work properly.

We've done dozens of 810s and 880s and haven't seen this issue, though. Maybe the problem is w/ the charger plug?

I was thinking he should take it back to his dealer as defective, and upgrade.

I went down to Best Buy to look at the 880 & 980. The problem was quite obvious after seeing the 880: the charging pin in the remote was bent. Actually two straight remotes had bent (and loose) charging pins.

I am surprised URC would have such a basic quality problem. You would think that they would test the units before packaging?

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe you will upgrade my remote for free and do the initial programming for free? And I am sure you will also do any future programming changes for free?

I do not consider the 980 an "upgrade". It is way more expensive (with programming), it is uglier, and I dislike the layout of the hard buttons much more than the 810. I only need to program one 810 for a simple 1 room theater, not program many to make my living. It is perfect when it is actually able to charge the battery.

I apologize for my rant, but as a consumer (end user) some of these posts are very discouraging, unprofessional, and almost makes me want to abandon this web site. It is a public forum, and custom installers should remember that you are selling yourself and the industry as a whole.

I was just trying to find out if there is a quality issue with the MX-810. The main reason I purchased the 810 over a Harmony was strictly a quality issue. It is quite obvious the 810 is much better made than a Harmony One.

The response I received from a supposed industry professional is that I purchased a junky remote and I do not know what I am doing (my interpretation).

It is a quality issue, mine also broke, but a couple months later, the idea of the plug is stupid.

Their is a simple and cheap 10 dollar fix, check out my thread, I purchased a plug in charger, it also came with the same battery that the mx-810 uses, so i basically plugged the charger in, it fit perfectly into the wall, and was tiny. I left one battery in, used the other, when one was low, i just swapped them, and you have full power again in a second. Its much better then any charging method when you have a spare battery always charged. Literally takes 10 seconds and your at full power for a few days. When that one dies, just switch them, put the dead one in the charger, and the other in your remote.

I switched to nevo however, so i dont have it with me anymore, but if you search my thread i gave details about it.

Im having the same problem with my MX-880. It was fine for about a year and now all of a sudden, It wont charge unless I mess with the plug for about 10 minutes.

Im thinking about getting an external charger and second battery if ones available

Bent charging plugs have shown up on 2 or 3 of the remotes we've done. One was obviously dropped (jack was at a significant angle and plug was also bent), one was shut in a cabinet door (at the admission of the owner), and I seem to recall a third one having trouble also, but I don't remember details.

I'm not at all saying that you are to blame, just letting you know that it has shown up before. IMHO, anytime a jack and plug such as these are used, bending of the center wire is a possibility.

Now about the 980 being ugly...now we're going to have a "discussion"...;)

i just had a MX-880 replaced for the same issue...maybe URC will redesign with a base or cradle similar to the 980. surely it couldn't cost that much more.

Nope, for a $100 more you'll get a recharging base and no plug. It's called a MX980 and it's a much better remote overall. If the MX880 shipped with a bent pin, I would get it replaced immediately, but this sounds like another issue altogether. Do you have the same problem with your cell phone charger?

i like the 880 feel and cost for a secondary remote. theaters get a 980. i just think urc could come up with a better charging system for the 880 whether its a base or a different plug for the charger.

the MX-880 didn't ship with a bent pin. the customer somehow broke it...

all cell phones we have owned for the last several years have don't have a pin for a charger. iphone, razor, 3 diff samsungs, other motorolas...i guess the cell phone manufacturers realized the pin wasn't a good idea and couldn't stand up to the abuse and have all redesigned their chargers.

This is a strange thread to me. I have about 50 or so MX 810s in the field and none of them have had problems with the exception of one that the charger was tripped over ripping the wall wart out and breaking off a prong. I replaced the wall wart and there was no damage to the remote at all. I use the 810s for kids rooms and guest quarters so they see more abuse then any of the other remotes I carry.

I wonder if there was a bad batch somewhere along the way that I was fortunate enough to miss????

Maybe I will send one to Roddy and see how long it lasts. If it doesn't break for him then I will deem it bulletproof!

I am now at the end of the life of my second MX 810. Exactly the same issue with the plug no longer charging the remote. Pathetic.

I find my 810 charger ports hard to see. Since reading the above issues , I am going to put a little white ring around the port and stop guessing in the darkened room.
Just a thought.
