adt2- some folks around here just get their panties in a bunch whenever someone manages to do something on their own without overpaying a "pro" to design them a "solution".

Good job on the repair.

I'd like to buy a new keypad for one on my MX-850 that wore out, but URC won't just sell me the part, but they'll gladly replace the whole thing ... oh, for about what it cost me to go out and buy a new MX-900.

The throw-away economy is rather out of control ...

It's great that he fixed it.. but don't come on here with some complete bullshit that his total invested time was 15 minutes. If it was simply the battery terminals as he says anyone should have been able to figure that out just by opening the battery cover, I've figured that one out an many occasions.

Repair prices are determined by the actual cost that the company has calculated that it will take to perform the fix. From the price of the circuit board to the average amount of time an employee will sit on a tech support call to the amount of time an admin will take to enter the order of the part, track the shipping, enter in the receipt of the part, entering the customer info into a database, charging the part to the customer, assembling the bill for the customer, a technician to do the repair, the time the technician takes to write up a service slip and enter his time on his weekly time sheet, the admin taking this info and coming up with a final charge, admin entering info into UPS for shipping, someone to box the unit up and attach the shipping label.. and so on..

The price is the price for a reason.. if you don't like it move to a commune and start baking bread to trade with the guy down the street for beads..

Price for remote new: $700 [Link: powersystemsdirect.com] And we know Wholesale is even lower.
Price for "repair": $200
Percentage price for "repair": $200/$700 = 28.6%

Fins, Kgossen, Cma, I can only hope you get such a good deal next time you take your car in for service.

This sounds like URC doesn't want to repair remotes, so they "gouge" their customers for the entire cost of a new remote, and call it a repair.

For me to walk into a facility for a service call, it's a minimum of 4hrs labour. That alone puts the bill over $200. Bench time has a high labour rate, and usually, (from my experience) the same minimum. $200 is a safe guess but I'd imagine it doesn't cover all the costs all the time.

Anyone complaining about a $200 blind quote on an electronically based repair has no clue what their talking about. Are they a cheapskate...?....no, I don't believe so. Are they ignorant of what truly technical labour costs...?....definitely.

That's not necessarily the case at all, and ultimately who cares?

For many people, $200 is far too much to have to pay to fix a simple problem.

It's just an opinion, not a personal assault.

Depends how fast you drove in to the wall, and what the bumpers were rated for ...

In reality the scenario happens all the time, and most companies just eat it because it's better to let a customer get away with a little something and in the process keep them as a loyal customer who'll come back because they know the company has their back.

Fact is remote controls like cars are designed to survive a certain amount of abuse and when they can't or don't ... it is a manufacturing defect.

But other than that, your comparison is really off base.

I imagine if it was still under warranty, and I couldn't fix it myself, they'd just fix it.

But I'd hope they would have been smart enough in the design to protect against a reversed connection given the likelihood of the mistake being made.

Worst case, a fuse should blow.

And that is a user servicable part, and should cost no more then a few dollars to replace.

Fortunately we don't have to throw away our cars whenever something wears out on them, or breaks due to an accident.

I'm just pointing out your opportunistic approach in knocking any post that's positive URC in any manner. There was no need to respond to cma's comments other than to try and disparage URC and their policies.
