Hi,

I just purchased an URC-50 for my bedroom and I really do like the remote. I have a LG LCD mounted on the wall and then the cables run to a remote closet where I keep the dvd player, satellite box, etc. I have IR going back to those units via CAT5 and I use a Xantech system for handling IR.

My problem is that when I point the remote right at the IR receiver, it really doesn't work unless I'm really close to it (within 6' or so). My bed is about 17' from the TV. However, when I point the remote elsewhere (rear wall, side wall, ceiling), the remote works fine. Why is this? Is there a way to fix it? I'm fine with it, but my wife and kids have some issues learing the "point the remote away from the TV and it will work" trick.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

Where is the IR Receiver located?
You are inferring that only the IR Receiver isn't taking the direct line-of-sight commands.
Does the TV take the commands with no problem, or are they also in your IR Receiver "system"?

The IR receiver is under the TV. It blinks like it is receiving the signal from the remote (when I aim directly at it), but nothing happens. It blinks as well when I shoot the IR off the wall, but the commands work as desired.

The TV takes the commands without any problem either way.

Thanks,
Gary

Do you know for sure that your Xantech IR receiver is LCD friendly? What model is it? Sometimes you even have to move up to the plasma friendly IR receiver, depending on the TV.

Here's the description of the piece: 48085 LCD/CFL Proof Dinky Link™ IR Receiver. It worked fine with the DirecTV remote, but oddly I have to shoot the URC-R50 off of the wall to make it work.

Try turning the IR receiver around facing the wall to bounce the signal off the wall behind the TV. I have quit using IR receivers around LCDs because of to much interference.
There is a great need for a Sarcasm font!

OK next question. Did you learn the DirecTV codes to the URC or did you use their pre-programmed codes?

I turned the receiver around. It now faces the wall just a few inches behind it --- it seems to be working much better now. Thanks!
