The following is absolutely nothing groundbreaking, but I thought I would post just in case it can be of use to somebody somewhere.

As an integration pro, I deal with Dish, DirecTV, and cable on a regular basis. Also, I fortunately just switched from cable back to DirecTV recently, and I was annoyed that, with DirecTV, pressing the Guide button while the Guide is displayed does not exit the Guide as it does with Time Warner (and Dish, IIRC).

Using my MX-980, I created a variable called Sat Guide. There are 2 default ways to exit the guide: Exit, and Selecting a highlighted channel/program. All I'm doing is tracking/changing the status of the guide within the Exit and Select buttons, but only when the Guide's status is True. (You wouldn't want to change the status of the guide if you were exiting out of a setup menu instead of the Guide).

So basically, when I press Exit, the Exit command is sent, and if the guide is displayed (status is True) the Guide is set back to false. When I press Select, the select command is sent, and if the guide is displayed, the Guide variable is set back to false. Now for the tiny little thing that I wanted to accomplish in the first place: When I press Guide and the guide is already displayed, the Exit command is sent and the Guide variable is set back to false.

It took 15 minutes to do the programming and 10 minutes to type this, but by God, I don't have to use Exit to get out of my satellite guide anymore.

Congrats. I personally prefer just mashing exit, but this is exactly why we all want configurable remote controls with scripting abilities - and not dumbed down offerings.

What happens if you press the "Back" button?

I can understand the use for that. But with Dish when I push the guide button when the guide is displayed it gives a list of different guides I can choose from like all channels, subscribed channels, all hd, and then whatever fav lists I have.
There is a great need for a Sarcasm font!

Good question--I never use it; didn't even cross my mind, but I'll go ahead and track the guide there too. Thanks for pointing that out.

Don't forget that the LEFT arrow can also act as the BACK button in certain instances. The Guide is not one of them, but if you are tracking BACK button status, it could get out of sync if you use the LEFT arrow to exit menus etc.

I'm interested in your solution to the problem of tracking the Guide status when the Back button is pressed. Pressing the Guide button once takes you to the channel program summary. Pressing it again takes you to a "filter" page. Pressing Exit from the filter page takes you out of the Guide, but pressing the Back button takes you back to the Guide. How do you plan to track the Guide status if someone chooses to go to the Filter page?

Hmm, I'll have to take another look when I get back from Atlanta.

I have set up the Guide button so that, if the guide is not already displayed, one press brings up the guide and sets the "guide status" to True. When the "guide status" is true, pressing Guide exits out of the guide. This inadvertently causes the Filter screen to never come up. What I have done is created a "Filter" button, which contains If/Else programming. When "Filter" is pressed, if the "guide status" variable is true, the guide command is issued (the guide is already displayed and I'm sending Guide again to get to the filter page). When "Filter" is pressed and "guide status" is false, the guide command is issued twice and "guide status" is set to true (the guide is not already displayed so the first Guide command brings up the guide and the second brings up the filter page). It works every time.

Sounds good. It's one of those cases where it may take two variables to do the work. But how do you handle the "Back" button? I guess if "Filter" is true, you issue a "Back" and set "Filter" to false. If "Filter" is false, you set "Guide" to false and either issue a "Back" or an "Exit"?
