I had the same problem with my original MX-980 battery (purchased April 08). It worked fine for a while, but then started giving out after a couple hours. It was also charging too fast, maybe 20 min from dead to blue light (full charge).
Not sure who the manufacturer was.

I didn't get a free replacement battery. No one had ever had this problem a year ago. Dealer response was "When not in use, the remote should be on the charger". OR "You could try a new battery, but we have to order it". I won't tell you what I paid for an official URC battery. I should have called URC directly, skip the dealer.

Since then it's worked fine. The new battery is a Bexel 1100mAh.

Then my LCD screen was cracked mysteriously, hence the return post.

You can bet I popped the old battery back in before sending it off. Now I'll have an extra.
Instead of asking me why my price is high ask the other guys why they are low.

I just got my MX-980. Programmer showed me how to operate it. Left. Next day I took it off its base and it was dark. Off. Today I picked up a new battery at the store. Charged it. Still dark. Reading the threads it looks like I have to play with how the remote sits in the charger. Let me just say that this is bad design. I have owned dozens of items, from cell phones, iphones and remotes that had chargers and there was never a case where one had to think about how careful you are in placing the instrument in its holster. I will go back and play with it. But for the money spent, the company should be fixing the problem and supplying replacement holsters. Learn from Toyota. No one is dying here. But this is a design flaw that should be fixed in an instrument as otherwise well regarded as this. Also, if it is true that it gives 2 hours of life, I will be returning it.

I typically sell 5-10 URC batteries a week and most of the people I sell to have had their remotes for 2-3 years. I have noticed a possible problem with the 950 due to a bad batch of batteries, but havent seen one in awhile.

I sell about 20 replacement batteries these remotes a week and from conversations with customers I agree that 2-3 years is a good estimate of their life span. I have seen a few that have made it as long as 5 years but they are few and far between. Regarding the charging issue I would try cleaning the battery and charger contacts to ensure that there is nothing disrupting the charge.
