Anybody heard of this before? it seems if I use the "mute on" code using an MX-900 it only mutes it for a limited time...(don't know the exact time but I would say around 2 hours), then it turns the muting off. I know I can just hit the mute again but is this a glitch in the receiver? or a safety feature...anyway around this?

Thanks

Does it also happen when you mute with the Yamaha factory remote?

Got nothing to do with the mx-900 (unless someone is pressing the mute again of course). The yamaha is timing out the mute, which leads me to a question of what do you need to mute for that length of time?

I am using it when I switch to using the TV's speakers instead of the surround speakers through the Yamaha. Is there a better way of handling this type of switching? If I still want to use the Yamaha for video switching (SAT and DVD) but remove audio completely?

I've got another question. Why, if you've got the Yamaha, and roundy sound, would you want to listen through the TV's speakers? Just curious.

I'm not a big fan of this for obvious reasons but every once in a while there comes along a client who must have this feature....the reason is usually to keep someone else happy in another room (i.e. not disturb). FWIW here is a fix you can try.

Create a button in your preamp page titled something like V.Set

Use this command for the V.Set
0000 006D 0022 0002 0157 00AC 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0689 0157 0056 0015 0E94

Create another button call something like V.Recall

Use this command for the V.Recall
0000 006D 0022 0002 0157 00AC 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0015 0040 0015 0689 0157 0056 0015 0E94

D/L to the remote.

Now you should have those 2 buttons available somewhere on the mx900

OK if you're with me so far...here's where it gets fun.

Turn the volume down on your preamp to -80 db (full mute) or whatever the lowest limit is on that unit.

Press the V.Set button you created.

Crank it back up so you can hear it.

Press V.Recall

Does it go back to -80db?

If yes....

Go back into your programming and if you have a macro already in place for listening to TV speakers and not the Yamaha (sounds like you do) place the V.Recall within that macro. Save the macro. D/L to remote.

Turn the tunes back up and test your macro.

If it works I'll provide my address for payment submission.

OR....you could just turn the volume down on the preamp!

I've never understood why anyone would want to use a TV's built-in speakers when you have a "real" audio system available - especially when the remote does all the hard work of turning things on and setting inputs.

The first TV I ever had with audio output I immediatly plugged into a non-remote-controlled Rotel receiver (thankfully the TV had variable output). Recently I had to use the speakers on an LCD set for a month before I got my wall mounted speakers up, and it was HORRIBLE compared to what I'm used to.

A/V system too loud? Turn down the volume. Too much bass? Probably not calibrated correctly, or turn on Night mode. Just like listening to tinny, muffled, distorted sound? Then why do you have a real system anyways... :-)

Tweeterguys suggestion is spot on. I have pre-set volumes in my macros for ALL my activities. It just makes sense, as different sources play at such a wide range of volumes. Example: I just added an Airport Express and the volume needs to be on -13db for normal listening, yet for watching TV, that's VERY loud.

Also, I agree 100% with Daniel. I don't even send any audio to the TV.

Tweeterguy- WOW! Thanks, your solution sounds like it should work! However I won't be able to test it until Tuesday. As to why I'm using the TV speakers for any type of audio, this was a unique request and I had my differences but didn't feel it was worth arguing, I thought it was a simple enough request at the time. I agree 100% with using anything and I mean anything but the TV speakers.

I've used the volume trim on Yamaha's in the past for switching inputs, I will have to experiment with the preset volumes as there is always limitations to using the trim feature. Thank You!

OR send a discrete power OFF to the Yamaha in the macro instead of muting

[Edit] Sorry - missed the bit about retaining video switching above.

i think hes running the video thru the avr.

id stick the avr in 2 channel mode for times when he would listen withg the TV speakers. I usually run the DSP at Straight. 2 channel with the news, surround a sound when encoded.

If he REALLY needed the tv speakers then he could do 1 of two things

One, he could create a macro to go into 2 channel then send the code to disable speakers A.

OR he could create a scene that sets the avr to volume -80, sets input, etc

Preset Volume's are the best solution without doing video (and analog audio) switching at the TV with Surround Audio switching at the amp, and creating seperate remote profiles...and training the customer on how the systems operate...Had to do this for a customers about 3 months ago, and had to have a seperate system integrated for 'zone 2' house sound that also ran independently, and the budget only allowed for an MX650. Hence, I know it is doable on anything other then an mx810 with patience, and programming (creative problem solving).
