Hi, I just bought a new MX-850. I downloaded the MX-Editor program and began programming the remote. However, my PC is not recognizing the remote. The download message I keep getting is telling me either the port is incorrect or the cord is defective. I have tried two different USB patch cords, as the cord that came with the remote is a serial, my PC is acknowledging the cord and driver, I have tried all 8 com ports carefully matching them with the PC and editor program, still nothing.. I also tried this on another PC. If anyone has any words of wisdom, please share. Thanks!!!

You need to use a USB to Serial adapter, and the original cable. People have had luck with the Belkin's.

I have used the serial to USB. I have a few different cords. Still no response from the remote.

Which operating system are you running on your PC?

What adapter are you using? Not all serial-to-USB adapters work with the MX-850. Using one by Belkin or Keyspan is your best bet.

I use just a prolific parallel adapter.. nothing fancy, no box with a board inside, nothin. Just a simple doooda, that looks like this.

I have that one and a few others, still nothing. I've also checked the software version too. I am running off of Windows XP.

I'm not sure, but maybe you need the old version software? I would think that the new version would be backwards compatible, but who knows.

I've used a PCMCIA Serial adapter for years and have have no issues until just a few weeks ago. Connection/Com Port Error message with all the computer/software settings correct. I purchased an IOGear USB>Serial Adapter and has able to connect to a MX-850 once, and ever since I get a failure message-"Unknown wakeup"
"Was it for this my life I sought? Maybe so, Maybe not...

To be honest you should be using a comp with a serial port! When I first starting programming 850's for my company I was using the usb the serial adaptor and it sucked!!! I would go to jobs hours away from shop and not be able to upload because I could not get the stupid cable to work! After a few long trips of wasted time and money the company finally bought be a new comp with a seral port!!

I had same trouble !!, but finally got it work with serial cable. I wasn't connected to the Internet at first, so got online to do some research and ran Software Update then try to connect to MX-850, then all of sudden it started working thru the serial cable it came with ???? But now I am having troubles with using MX-850 with MRF-350 receiver which i will be posting Questions for.

I have had to go into Windows' Device Manager, find the USB device (under Ports, I think) and tell it to use Com1. It seems something else would tell it to change, but changing it back has never had a negative impact on anything I use, and it alway fixes the connection problem the USB/Serial cable.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Actually based on today's technology (and last years and the year before's) URC SHOULD get into "TODAY" and provide a USB cable for their remotes. I am fortunate in the latest notebook I got was a few months ago and it has a 9 pin serial port. Most computers DO NOT come with serial (try and find a parallel port!!!) ports any more.
I prefer RTI - THEY ACTUALLY WORK!!!

LOL parallel...please :-)

If your laptop has a PCMCIA slot get a PCMCIA-RS232 card. I've got the SSP-100 from Quatech and it works like a champ. No more worrying about usb-serial adaptor BS and it works for other serial programming i.e. lutron, crestron, amx, etc.
