Here is one way to determine if it could be something
within the remote or RF issues. Set the entire remote
to IR only, then save and download the file to your remote.
Test the commands while pointing directly at your equipment.
If the equipment responds immediately, then the issue
it directly related to RF.

This morning I tried part of what you suggested. I downloaded the new update on 10/20 then changed the satellite to IR only, saved and sent the file to the remote. This morning as I was surfing the sat guide, I hit page up and about 2-3 seconds later it paged. There were a few times when there was no response at all. It does not happen very often. I have not been able to see any pattern to it. But the same problems showed up several times with the sat on IR only.
When this is all over, we'll be smarter.

Dave,

Did you try a stock template from the MX Editor? It sounds like the processor or memory could be getting bogged down and causing the delay.

Let me know.

Thank you,
Damon DG

OK, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I loaded a stock metallic template with 12 devices, all unprogrammed. Used preprogrammed codes for the Dish 625 satellite receiver and downloaded the 639KB file to the MX-3000.
Results: Same problem. Occasionally, when I push the page up button on the screen or the right navigation hard button there will be a pause of 2 to 3 seconds then the emitter for the satellite will blink. Occasionally, the button will beep and no RF will be sent.
Since the remote had the very same symptoms when I set it for IR only, I know it is probably not an RF problem so I set it back to RF only so it is easier to see when a signal is sent and see the delay.
The file that I designed was about 6Meg. The test file was all stock, only 639KB so the problem appears to be with the remote itself. Since this remote is a couple of years old, whatever is causing the problem may have already been corrected.
UPS just brought a new MX-3000 today, direct from URC, thanks to a CEDIA class. I’ll charge the battery, download the stock test satellite file to it and let you know what happens with the new MX-3000.
I sent my file to Eric on the 18th but have not heard anything, perhaps it got lost in a spam filter or he's working on it now.
Thank you for your suggestions. They have helped narrow the possibilities. We’re smarter than we were.

Let us know if the new remote works properly.

Mine does this as well. Also, sometimes when you "wake up" the unit, it quickly goes back off (instead of staying on for the amount of time you have set it for). Often a second "wake up" is required. Sometimes these first/second "wake ups" will actually start to execute commands if (while waking up) you hit a button. I've gotten into the habbit of using the hard buttons to wake it up (like Volume) that I know will not execute long macros, etc. My unit has always behaved this way. SJ

I loaded my file into the New MX-3000 and installed the older battery, just in case the problems were due to a defective or weak battery. So far the new MX-3000 has not exhibited the delay or fail problem. I have not done a lot of testing yet but it looks like the problem is only in the older MX-3000.
I think it was sometime during the process of swapping the batteries that the older MX-3000 locked up. It is just displaying the MX-3000 startup screen and saying “loading system files”. I have tried pushing the reset button in the battery compartment. I have tried removing the battery. The screen never completes the loading and never goes to the main page. I am able to upload from the remote and download to the remote. I have tried holding down the main button to get into the menu to do a factory reset but no buttons beep or respond.
This new development adds another question. Were the problems due to an older version of firmware, hardware or were they no more than the symptoms of a dying MX-3000?

Dave E/SJHart,

I'm having the same problems of pushing a button and having it not send a command or having it send the command two or three seconds later as I stated earlier in this thread. I've had this problem forever and have never found a solution. I just live with it.

Could each of you post the O/S version and the hardware version/manufacture date (found on the little paper label in the battery compartment) of your problem MX-3000's? My MX-3000 has a O/S version of 4.10.908.10N (10/05/04) and has a hardware version of 8.8 (manufacture date of 12/24/04). My firmware version, which I believe should be current as I have the latest version of the editor, is 2.23.5.60627. If the O/S is the culprit it can be updated, I believe, by sending the unit back to URC. If it's the hardware then I suppose we're out of luck.

The date code on the paper label is 040905. Since the remote is locked up, I am unable to get into the menu to read any other information.
I was contacted by URC today. They want to look at my remote. They say that a lockup is very rare and want to see what may have caused it. URC is going to give me a new MX-3000. I appreciate them standing behind the product.

Mine is 090604 000027 ver 6.6. I probably have the first unit that was made! :) If URC wants my unit for testing, please send me an e-mail :) [email protected] SJ

SJHart,

Can you post your O/S version/date? It's found by holding down the main hard button for a few seconds and then hitting the system button. I'd like to know if we have the same O/S which could conceivably be the source of the problem and I believe can be updated if the remote is sent back to URC. Also please post your firmware version just for the sake of comparison. It should be the same as what I've posted above if you have the latest version of the editor software. When I hear back from you I will contact URC to see if they can shed any light on this problem we're having.

Thanks. SJ
