DIYer Does Temporary Theater for $2,300

Shawn Lyman didn’t need his theater to last forever. However, he did need it to be cheap.

Shawn Lyman has to laugh. He sees “Electronic House” profile $25,000—and even $5,000—theaters as “budget.” However, he is the biggest super-saver of them all. He spent a mere $2,000 on his theater room, and has never looked back—except to check in on his equipment, of course.

Shawn didn’t want to put too much money into the room. After all, he doesn’t plan to live in this house forever. “If the next owner doesn’t want to purchase the theater with the house, I wanted an easy way to remove everything about the theater in the shortest time possible,” he says. This is one of the reasons that he installed removable risers. “I estimate a single weekend room restore with zero impact on flooring or the riser.”

Aside from potential moving plans, Shawn also liked the challenge of keeping costs down.

Very nice room. The only comment i have is that in one of the pics i noticed he had a large box with "Excedrin" written on it. I wondered if A. He used all of that and B. Did he use it before, after or during the theater build?

Just sounds like a DIYer who would put in the carpet, then, “next, Shawn Lyman needed to finish the drywall.” Oddly, ceiling lighting magically jumped in before that shot, too.
Slide 5: zero comments about what he did for a screen, two comments about what he didn’t do.
Slide 7: nice ducting and indirect ceiling lighting!

I hope he was able to use the power from the old ceiling fixture for the projector. That would be quite a bonus, but wouldn't leave the installation invisible once removed.
I have ACTUALLY said this a thousand times: We can't help you much without the make and model of everything involved in the problem! Unless you want a vague answer. Or none. Your move.

It says that he made his own screen

One of his sources is a dedicated PC for music and more with 1tb of storage, was that figured into the total project cost.

I'd like to see the real break down:
PJ - $1k
HTIB was probably $500 but the 9 series I think is closer to 700 or 900
PS3 - $400
Screen - $50-$100
Riser - $???
Sofa - ???
Paint - ??
Lights - ??
Speaker wire?
Interconnects?

I just think the title is misleading, it's definitely more the $2300 for the complete project. Yes, he still got it done for very cheap and probably gets a decent little experience, but still misleading, IMO.

you know how it works, I have X, I have Y, I have Z, I bought A @a$, I bought B @ b$ and C @ c$ so the cost was a+b+c. You see it all the time, especialy when DIYers want to talk about how little they spent.

I'm still trying to figure out why "many audiophiles may pooh-pooh Shawn’s decision to add a 720p projector"

:-)

Ah. I was not intrigued enough to read the article. I should have read it before asking questions about what was missing.

I think this has to do with the ability of the audiophile to hear the difference between 720p and other scan rates.

This is not the only place where this writer mixes categories and ends up with illogical writing. In the thread about CE On The Cheap, he says he's going to show some places where cheaper may not be better. He then has two* categories, Costco TVs and CE Online. He doesn't mean to say that CE Online is a bad place to save money, but he says "some," lists one only (Costco TVs), then with no separation or introduction, shows CE Online...this is exactly how it would be written if the purpose were to describe CE Online as being in the same category with Costco TVs.

*If you're saying "some," I don't think two are enough. He actually only mentions one. If this is because he mentions, say, ten in the actual article, he should have written that into the post. You shouldn't have to read the article for the post to make sense.
