Will New Xbox Experience Kill Apple TV?Coming via a free software upgrade, the NXE might make Xbox 360 the ultimate entertainment hub.

For several years, consumer electronics and computer companies alike have fantasized about creating the ultimate entertainment hub, a single set top box that could manage all your music, movies, video games, and even tap into the Internet. With a major software upgrade this week, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 may come close to realizing the fantasy. The update not only goes a long way toward smoothly integrating all these features, but also includes direct access to Netflix’s instant play movie service, which could help the company win the war to become the iTunes of downloadable movies.
To be released on Wednesday, November 19, as an automatic upgrade the New Xbox Experience (NXE) jettisons the geeky “blade” user interface in favor a more legible and manageable interface. In general appearance, it looks more like the rotating screens of Aero from Windows Vista, which lets users sit back and flip through a virtual Rolodex of gaming options, downloadable features, and videos online. In other words, it looks more the face of a television entertainment hub than a computer-based gaming machine. Indeed, after a couple of weeks of testing NXE, I found it to be friendlier, faster, and cleaner than the old software, and it contains some elements Xbox owners—and those considering an Xbox 360 purchase—will likely find irresistible.
3D Avatars There are now animated 3D avatars that owners can customize to represent themselves online. Unlike the kid-friendly avatars of the Nintendo Wii, you can adjust more features including body shape, face, hair, and sartorial choices. You can even join up to 7 avatar friends in a virtual area to chat while you’re playing a game or skipping through photos or just hanging out. The NXE also has a section promoting upcoming Live events, such as game previews and contests. Microsoft plans to expand this area to include original programming and game shows where Xbox Live subscribers can win real prizes (and not just new hair styles for their avatars).

I think anything can kill the Apple TV experience. Every time our company installs one, we always do service calls. So many problems syncing and transferring data, the firmware updates aren't automatic. I think this product is about as good as the Shuffle. Its an apple name in an apple package with a brick inside. IMHO.

IMHO. as an end user i will agree it shouldnt be installed into a home unless the client already uses itunes and understands what equipment is being used and why. as anyone who understands itunes and has half a brain will get over 90% of any issues that may arise.
my overall experience has been EXCELLENT, i have had a few issues with syncing etc, but it was just a matter of figuring it out properly. what aTV lacks is a thorough manual, but being its an ever evolving product i doubt it would do much good anyway.
comparing it to the Xbox 360 (which i own) as a media hub, the aTV is HANDS DOWN superior. for starters the 360 is LOUD! even with the volume high you can still hear the fans whirring. plus the 360 menus are tedious to navigate, not to mention i have many Original CD's it wont read, and to stream anything to it is a joke as theres always some lag when navigating any song lists or picture menus. whereas the aTV is lightning fast and has a WAY slicker looking GUI. the latest GUI for 360 is awful looking, unless you're under the age of 10.
i now have my entire CD collection on the aTV's HD at lossless quality, all organized perfectly with album artwork etc. this is all i wanted it for, but add the fact you can now have 2 way control with itouch/phone, stream from it to airport express modules, i can rent/buy movies, surf youtube (alot of live music shows you'll never find anywhere else, they dont look great but the sound is good, and you can save them to your favourites to watch again), etc, and its the cats pajamas IMHO.

I wouldnt suggest that Xbox has it figured out either. I think Apple, like with so many of their other products had an excellent idea that was poorly applied. What you may discuss as "a few issues with syncing etc" has been a daily struggle for any apple TV I have come into contact with. Apple does have a pretty face, pretty design, pretty package. Ultimately its products are pretty and fall apart, much like every ipod, iphone, and macbook I have owned. It has been my experience that your "excellent experience" with the Apple TV has been the exception to the rule rather than the rule itself.
I can hardly suggest that YouTube videos with their various qualities and Codecs is worthwhile on any quality HDTV. I have my PC connected to my xbr5 via rbg and can get much higher resolution than 1920X1080. Itunes is a joke too. Renting and buying movies that dont share the same quality as actual printed materials. Sigh. I appreciate that you enjoy your apple tv and your experience. I do not, have not, and would not suggest the product to a friend, nor would I use it in my own home. But that's all preference I suppose.

between myself, my wife, and my kids, we've owned a few iPods now, and we've NEVER replaced one for any other reason than wanting a cooler model, or user negligence (wife put one through the washer, son droppoed his in the snow and didnt find it till the snow thawed - even then it still played music but the screen was fubared) and frankly i dont think apple would be where they are today if the "average" experience for end users was anything like what you described.
there seem to be at least a few CI's here on the site who have integrated aTV quite successfully into clients homes.
FYI - youtube has nothing to do with my positive opinion of aTV, i was just saying its a nice bonus to access media you normally cant on your TV.

Apple does have a pretty face, pretty design, pretty package. Ultimately its products are pretty and fall apart, much like every ipod, iphone, and macbook I have owned. How odd (part 2). This goes against all survey data. Is everything a nail to you, and all of your Apple products hammers?
Itunes is a joke too. Renting and buying movies that dont share the same quality as actual printed materials. Don't confuse the iTunes interface with the Apple iTunes store. I have my entire 800+ CD collection ripped to a Mac Mini hard drive, bit-for-bit. The only thing I've ever paid for and downloaded from the iTunes store was an episode of "Lost" that my DirecTV failed to record. That episode, viewed via my AppleTV looked and sounded spectacular. And no commercials.

What ever happened with this? I guess I should fire up my Xbox and see if the update ever came. It's been that long!

I got the new dashboard, but haven't spent much time with it. I downloaded the PLAYON software onto my PC and have been using my X360 for watching Hulu in the family room catch'n up on The Office.
