another update.
i installed the 'defective' players on brand new model TVs. One from Mits, two from LG. All worked 100%.
Players did not work on older sets (about 3 years) from Fujitsu , Samsung and Vizio.
Who knows WTF the problem was. Real pain in the A$$ though
