It shouldn't look TOO bad, really.
I remember back in the mid 90's some photo editing programs actually used to have native 16-bit editing modes (15-bit too?), and could use random dithering when converting from a 24-bit image to hide that sort of banding. But that kind of thing was dropped long ago.
