well, I think I know what the problem is, and I hope SchmartStuff updates their info:
the PS3IR-500, unlike the 1000, needs to stay on at all times! so if you plug it in the PS3's USB, once you turn it off, it will no longer respond! You have to plug it into a live USB port!!!!!!
Luckily I have a Directv HR-20 right beside it which has a USB port that is always live, and so it keeps it on.
