From what I've learnt so far Girder seems to be the best software for converting IR commands into PC commands.

I also purchased a cheap IR receiver called irman which plugs into a com port from
www.evation.com

I'm just in the process of setting it up myself for playing DVDs via the PC but from what I've read it can do pretty much anything.
