I already looked at the sample files, whilst they look very nice I found them to be functionally lacking in some areas. See below.

This is exactly the approach taken by the designers of the examples. Whilst this (arguably) does work it is effectively a brute force method - switch everything on at once whether it's needed or not. The key feature of a Harmony is knowing what's on and what's not, and knowing when to switch power and not. Therefore, as well as power on/power off functions you need functions to switch to and from each activity, controlling power for the equipment used in each activity.
