Just to reiterate with regards to the RFX9400.... When Network mode is set to Ethernet, the communication between your wireless router and the Extender happens via ethernet (wired). When Network mode is set to Wireless, the communication between your wireless router and the Extender happens via Wi-Fi (wireless).
