thanks for the copy and paste from the thread. I read that thread when I was tired last night and.. just missed it.

Confirming
1) Use Null cable
2) No carriage return
3) baud rate at 9600

To all who are interested:
Assure you only use the recommended USB to serial adapters

Rebooting the receiver after attaching the serial adapter does not work reliably. Remove power from the DVR, attach the USB adapter, power the receiver up and you are good to go.
