I am trying to control an HR21 through RS232. I have connected the recommended GUC232A USB adapter to the RFX9600. I did have to connect using a female/female cable as both the adapter and RFX unit have male pin outs. I am using a straight through cable (as opposed to null modem).

I am trying to send the active command which is FA 82 hex to turn on the unit (I've tried with both 0D -- Carriage Return -- and without). Based on some other readings online I've tried at different baud rates though the DirecTV manual specifies 9600. I've also tried rebooting the HR21 after hooking everything up. According to the manual, a reboot is necessary to recognize the USB connection. With all that done, I cannot get the command to work.

I saw one other thread here with someone having the same problem, but apparently getting it to work eventually, but I'm not sure what they did other than sending hex instead of ASCII. Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions to try?

Did you try a null modem cable or adapter?

Do you think null modem would make sense? If the extender had a female output, I would be plugging the adapter directly into that. The cable is simply being used as a gender changer.

When you got it to work did you need Carriage Return? Thanks for the link to the manual.

No carriage return and baud rate 9600.
