I'm sure it's recognized becuase I can see it's drive
letter in the "safely remove hardware" folder and the
"beeps" the PC makes confirm that it is connected. The
PC thinks it's a USB mass storage device.

BTW I'm just letting Windows install the driver. How would
I reinstall the driver?

OK. I managed to copy over the compress Maestro folder. While the 9800 was still in application download mode I pulled the USB cable and got the following error message on the screen of the 9800 upgrade failure error 000a.
