Hope I'm not replying to a dead thread...

I'm really on the fence re the Nevo -- been thinking about getting a demo for a week now. I like the size, the looks, the WiFi and the hard buttons. Unfortunately, based on the posts in the forum, it seems like the software just isn't quite there, yet. Maybe software/firmware upgrades will bring the product the rest of the way, but, maybe not. I see the potential, but don't want to waste my time demo-ing the product if it's not saleable.

Anywho, I've got a XP-based RAID 5 server at home, loaded with .flac and IFO files (that I could convert to WMA Lossless and .AVI files in order to use the Nevo Media Player software). I'd love to be able to stream these files from the server upstairs to the living room PC. Is it possible to stream files from a server for playback on any other PC on the network? Does the Nevo software need to be loaded on the server PC? If the Nevo software can be loaded on any PC in the network, does the server PC need to be running Windows? Or, can the Nevo software recognize Samba shares from a Linux box? I'd like to install the Nevo software on the PC in the living room and migrate the XP-based server to the Lime Technology unRaid Linux-based server software (www.lime-technology.com). If reading a Samba share over the network is out of the question, what about mapping the network drives to the local PC?

I was also wondering whether the Nevo could gather file metadata from any UPnP media server? J River Media Center can act as a UPnP server, and it can spit out an .xml file of the metadata of all music files it has cataloged. I ask bc JRMC supports .flac files and has an excellent database. The product is MUCH more solid than WMP.

Also, any support for the Global Cache GC-100? It would be nice to be able to add the serial control it provides.

Finally, has anyone looked at replacing the Nevo software with other software, such as NetRemote or Housebot, for more flexibility? What about adding a 'device' button on the Nevo that launches either NetRemote or Housebot? That way, one could have the flexibility of either NetRemote or Housebot using the Nevo form factor and hard buttons.

TIA.

brad
