I understand that the RC9800 is supposed to allow
media streaming via wi-fi (not really necessary
for music for a mac user, since the "airport express"
does that for itunes, although you would need
a computer in the living room to control this).
However, with regard to the common intended use
of sitting on the sofa and pushing one button
to watch a DVD, with all of the correct devices
switching on, off, selecting the correct inputs,
etc: Does the RC9800 do this? Is it capable
of what the Harmony 880 can do?

This is exactly what the 9800i does, once you setup the devices and activities. You just have to click on watch DVD and the remote turns on the DVD player, home cinema set (if you have one) and the television. And on the home cinema set it selects the correct input source and on the TV is sets the correct av channel.
Or, is one just purchasing a promise of future
wi-fi abilities?

The "wi-fi" ability is (mainly) used to control an UpNp media adapter such as the streamium sl400i (or others) via the wireless network. It is also used to download the program guide from the internet. When watching TV you can use the guide to switch between channels by clicking on the program you're interested in.

If you have more questions let me know,

Best regards,
