If you were to press the backlight button on the side. Then no matter how bright the light is, the backlight will turn on. Even on the ts-1000, it will turn on. However, it should turn off after a second or two.

For this example, I am using my memory from my ts-1000.....

If I had the backlight setting for 3 seconds, LCD for 10 seconds.

I would place the remote in a high light area. Press the back light button, the back light will turn on for a second, then turn off.

However, if the ambeant light was "normal" and I would press the back light button, the back light will stay on for the 3 seconds in which I have the setting for.

If the room was dark, then it will stay on for the 10 seconds that the LCD was on for.

If however, I would touch the display instead of the backlight button. The back light will not turn on if the light was very bright. If the light was normal, then it might turn on, or it might not. If dark, then yes it will turn on for the whole 10 seconds.
