That is surprising. Assuming it is IR, not RF, learning a wrong or partial signal should be easy.

old B+W version could sometimes learn something (although
this didn't work when sending). Generally though I could
only get it to learn when pressing "temp down", when it
was already on the lowest temperature. I assumed this
was because holding down the button cycled through different
codes.

If the problem were what you describe from holding down the button, then a Pronto would just learn an incomplete code, not fail to learn anything. And also, if you think holding down the original remote button causes a problem (you might be right) try a really short press of the original remote button.
