Simply, JPEGS are pictures encoded with a lossy compression alg, so they tend to be the smallest in file size but are inferior in quality to BMP and PNG.
BMP are uncompressed, arguably the best quality but tend to be large files.
PNG, halfway house with bells and whistles!! (one of which mentioed above!)
