I agree with what you say. I bought mine for £300 ($500), and love it to bits. I also got very frustrated with previous remotes, in not being able to get all the buttons onto one page. No problems now!

I think a lot of the original complaints were sustainable, in that at £1300 it just didn't even do the basics. The most recent firmware, although not perfect by any means, appears stable.

If you can pick one up at the right price, they are a great unit. I went through about 7 learning remote controls before picking mine up, and can't think of another remote that I would replace it with. :)
