OK! Problem 1 has been solved by your directions, slightly modified. What I did was to use the DirecTV remote since that works with AV1. Even though the only button matching their request was the VolumeUp button, that was enough for the remote to figure it out!

Problem 2 is still being pesky but I think I'm making progress. =)
