The light on the base doesn't do anything useful - just switch it off!
The tiny indicator is not meant to be something accurate that you can measure, it's not likely to be faulty, and the best thing to do is to forget about it - leave the remote on the base whenever it's not in use, making sure its display shows that it is making proper contact with the terminals, and then it will never be low on charge.
