It will not operate the PS3 without using 3rd party hardware. I've seen posts on a few forums about two different products. One is a dongle that attaches to the PS3 and receives IR commands. The other I believe is a standalone IR-to-Bluetooth converter that receives the remote's IR and sends out the corresponding Bluetooth signal to the PS3.
Try doing a Google search on the subject and I'll bet you quickly find one of the solutions.
