Unfortunately the Auto Power On function isn't that (I wish it was), it turns the set on when the AC power appears.
I use this -- I hooked the Panasonic through a Niles AC controller which powers it on when it senses current flowing through my SAT tuner or DVD player. So I get discrete control this way. I'm not thrilled with it but it works after a fashion. The Power On/Off toggle for the display will still operate, which can defeat the whole scheme (if it's powered-off the Auto Power On won't turn it on).
Also, I couldn't use a TiVo box to trigger the current-sensing device -- TiVos draw unpredictable amounts of current, there's no clear difference between "on" and "off".
Mine is a TH50-PX20. I was lucky enough to get the Niles box on eBay for about $100. For now I guess it's OK.
